HIV/AIDS/STD Statistics
  • There are more than 20 different Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
  • 333 million new transmissions of STDs every year worldwide.
  • 12 million of those new infections occur in the United States.
  • 3 million of these infections are among teens.
  • The U.S. has the highest rate of STD, HIV and teen pregnancy; 50-100% higher than any other industrialized nation.
  • 25% of sexually active teens will get an STD in any given year.
  • 1 in 4 teens and 1 in 5 adults get an STD every year.
  • 1 in 3 adults who have an STD say they told their partners.
  • Acquiring any STD greatly increases the risk of HIV exposure.
Most common U.S. STD’s, according to the CDC:
  • Chlamydia: 4 million cases.
  • HPV: 500,000 to 1,000,000 cases. HPV is the single most important co-factor for cervical cancer.
  • Genital Herpes: 200,000 – 500,000 cases.
  • Gonorrhea: 800,000 cases.
  • Syphilis: 101,000 cases.
HIV:
  • 40,000 to 80,000 new HIV cases each year in the U.S.
  • 7 people per hour infected with HIV in U.S.
  • 2 teens infected every hour, every day in U.S.
  • Every minute every day there are 11 people infected with HIV world wide.
  • Every minute 6 adolescents (ages 10-24) infected HIV, world wide.
  • Half of all U.S. HIV infections occur in people under age 25.
  • HIV is 80% heterosexual and 80% sexually spread worldwide.
  • 6 years ago, 27% of new HIV infections were female. Today 50% are female.
  • 1 in 3 people with HIV don’t know they have it.
  • 650,000- 900,000 U.S. citizens have HIV. 200,000 are unaware of it.
  • 30-70% of people with HIV are asymptomatic for an average of 7-10 years.
  • It is 10 times easier for a woman to get HIV than a man.
  • A condom is 10,000 times safer than not using one.
  • Half of all new U.S. HIV infections in persons under 25 were acquired through sex.
  • About 42 million people live with HIV/AIDS worldwide.
  • 886,575 total U.S. AIDS cases as of December, 2002.
  • 501,669 have already died as a result of AIDS.
  • As of February, 2001 16,950 people in Philadelphia have AIDS.
  • African American and Hispanic people make up 25% of the U.S. population and 77% of all reported AIDS cases in the U.S.
  • 16% of reported AIDS cases in PA are senior citizens.
  • In 1999, 47% of all U.S. AIDS cases in women (ages 13-24) were acquired heterosexually.
  • 2 out of 3 single men and women say they do not always use condoms.
