High School Sex, Time Magazine 3/30/09
Of all industrialized nations in the world, the United States of America has THE HIGHEST RATES of TEEN PREGNANCY, STD’s and HIV infections, in some cases, 50 to 100 times higher.
One third of American high schools do not require any type of sex education for any students in any grade.
“Sex health is left up to gym teachers or who ever draws the short straw in the health or athletic department”.
In 2006, there were 41.9 births for every 1,000 US teen age girls ages 15 to 19.
In 2004, a Kaiser Family Foundation survey found that 95% of parents of middle-school students said contraceptive methods were “appropriate topics” for school health classes.
This month the National Center for Health Statistics reported that teen birthrates rose in 2007 for the second year, after a 15-year drop.
The system is broken; the proof, 650,000 teenagers traded sex for drugs and or money last year in the United States.

Jimmy, Hello, my name is Greg and I'm a freshman at Lafayette College. A little less than four years ago I attended the National Youth Leadership Forum for Medicine, which was hosted at Villanova University. Funny enough, I received an e-mail from someone at College Board the other day asking if I would write a short essay describing my experiences. As I collecting my thoughts on the forum I was thinking about the presentation you gave there, and I just wanted to let you know what an impact that had on me.
I recall talking to you for a little while afterward, but due to the pace of the forum had to quickly move on. I remember us talking about how medicine is not just about healing the physical disease, but about providing treatment to the patient both physically and emotional. We also discussed how some organization that were supposed to be the most caring did not come through at the end, ie churches that had turned you away, etc.
I'm still very interested in medicine, and I just wanted to let you know that I still frequently think of the talk you gave us. I really got a lot out of it, from the medical side and also on the note of respecting ours and others' bodies. I just wanted to thank you again and to check in to see how everything is going on your end. Hope all is well!
Greg

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. This event is the Super Bowl of my work. It is an honor to speak here for the 8th or 9th year in a row, honestly I've lost track of how many years I've done this college. This years event will be held on 2/23/10 beginning at 10:00 AM. This is a closed presentation for about 300 first year medical school students. I can invite a few guests. We’ll have two returning guest on the panel this year to work with the students, Darlene and Javier.
I'm fortunate to have the pleasure of working with Darlene over the past year more than ever before, her and I just finshed talking to almost 1,500 students over a four day period at Mathacton High School. It was freezing cold that week, I couldn't have done this with out her. We both ended up with colds, both marching back and forth in the auditorium doing 5 to 6- 45 minute lectures each day back to back. We would relive one another when our voices begain to crack, I only had to look in her direction and she'd come take the microphone out of my hand. Then I'd run and get her more tea! I guess I could say, Darlene is my exact opposite... not only in the obvious, but also... she's sweet and soft spoken and that gets the attention of the students right away, unlike my scary man approach. I think we make a great team and the students and teachers said so!
Javier and I only get to do this one lecture together each year because of his busy work schedule. Javier is one of the nicest, funniest, most serious guys I've ever presented with. If only I could get him into some of my high schools, I know the students would love him. He just has a way with kids.
