Contrary to popular belief, HIV infections are on the rise again. According to the World Health Organization, AIDS is 80% heterosexual and 80% sexually transmitted worldwide. In the United States of America, The Centers For Disease Control estimates that there are between 40,000 to 80,000 new HIV infections per year. The University of California San Francisco recently stated that 7 people are infected with HIV every hour every day in the United States. Two of the seven new infections each hour are among young people 13-25 years old. Fifty percent of the new infections in the United States occur among women under 25 years of age.

To date, there is no cure for HIV or AIDS. New advances in treatment options enable many to live longer, but toxic side effects soon cripple treatment combinations for those who can afford to use them. The next step in prevention for the new millennia is to reduce the spread of infections through education. The U.S. government has spent 440 million dollars over the last five years on an “abstinence only” education program that clearly does not work. The proof: 2 teenagers are infected with HIV every hour every day in the United States alone.

Now more than ever, learning the realities of this deadly virus and how to prevent contracting it is necessary for all young people and adults alike. We at Life-Zone are committed to helping reduce risk through education.
